Alocasia Dragon Scale
Alocasia baginda 'Dragon Scale'
Dramatic dark green leaves with silver veining and a reptilian texture — one of the most jaw-dropping collector aroids you can grow.
Overview
Alocasia Dragon Scale is one of the most visually stunning aroids in the plant world. Its thick, leathery leaves are a deep blue-green with intricate silver-green veining and a raised, almost reptilian texture that looks like it was carved by hand. Native to the rainforests of Borneo, it thrives in warm, humid conditions and rewards attentive care with leaves that can reach 12–18 inches on a mature plant. It goes through natural dormancy cycles and can drop leaves in low light or cold conditions — this is normal, not a death sentence.
Care Requirements
Light
Bright Indirect Light — no direct sun; scorches easily
Water
Every 1–2 weeks — keep soil lightly moist but never soggy; allow top inch to dry
Humidity
High (60–80%) — this is non-negotiable for healthy growth
Soil
Well-draining aroid mix — perlite, orchid bark, and potting mix; excellent aeration essential
Temperature
65–85°F (18–29°C) — protect from temperatures below 60°F; no cold drafts
Fertilizer
Balanced liquid fertilizer every 2–4 weeks during spring and summer; stop fertilizing in winter
Detailed Care Guide
Light
- Needs bright indirect light — a few feet from an east or north-facing window is ideal
- Direct sun scorches the dramatic leaf texture and bleaches the silver veining
- Low light causes slow growth, small leaves, and eventual dormancy
- Grow lights work exceptionally well for this plant in darker homes
Watering
- Water every 1–2 weeks — allow the top inch of soil to dry between waterings
- Soil should stay lightly moist but never waterlogged — root rot is a serious risk
- Use filtered or room-temperature water — sensitive to fluoride and chlorine
- Reduce watering significantly in winter or during dormancy
Soil
- Use a chunky, well-draining aroid mix — perlite, orchid bark, and potting mix in equal parts
- Excellent aeration is critical — compacted soil causes root rot quickly
- Slightly acidic pH (5.5–6.5) is ideal
- Repot every 1–2 years in spring when roots fill the pot
Temperature & Humidity
- Prefers 65–85°F (18–29°C) — one of the more temperature-sensitive aroids
- High humidity (60–80%) is essential — use a humidifier, pebble tray, or greenhouse cabinet
- Cold drafts and temperatures below 60°F trigger dormancy and leaf drop
- Keep away from air conditioning vents and cold windowsills in winter
Difficulty Level
Intermediate — Alocasia Dragon Scale is rewarding but demands consistent humidity, bright indirect light, and careful watering. The biggest challenges are maintaining high humidity and avoiding overwatering. It will go dormant in low light or cold — this is normal and it will bounce back in spring.
Extra Notes
Toxic to cats, dogs, and humans — contains calcium oxalate crystals that cause intense burning and swelling of the mouth and throat if ingested. Keep out of reach of pets and children. Wear gloves when handling — the sap can irritate sensitive skin. Dormancy is completely normal: if the plant drops all its leaves in winter, keep the corm barely moist in a warm spot and it will resprout when conditions improve.
Pro Tip
Humidity is the single most important factor for Dragon Scale. If you can't maintain 60%+ humidity, consider a mini greenhouse cabinet or a clear humidity dome — the difference in leaf size, texture, and color between 40% and 70% humidity is dramatic. This plant truly thrives when it feels like it's back in Borneo.

Just Received This Plant?
If you just received a cutting or node: pot into a warm, humid environment using a chunky aroid mix. Keep the soil lightly moist — not wet. Place in bright indirect light at 70°F+. Cover loosely with a clear plastic bag or humidity dome to maintain 70%+ humidity while roots establish. Expect the first new leaf in 4–8 weeks. Do not fertilize until you see active new growth.
If you just received a potted plant: unbox carefully and place immediately in bright indirect light away from any drafts. Do not water unless the soil is completely dry — shipping stress plus wet soil is a recipe for root rot. Set up a humidifier or pebble tray right away — this plant needs high humidity to settle in. Expect some leaf drama in the first 2 weeks as it adjusts. Do not fertilize for 6–8 weeks. Do not repot for at least 3 months.
Basic Care Instructions
Place in bright indirect light away from direct sun, water every 1–2 weeks allowing the top inch to dry, and maintain high humidity (60–80%). Use a chunky aroid mix with excellent drainage. Fertilize every 2–4 weeks in spring and summer. Protect from temperatures below 60°F and all cold drafts.
Propagation
Divide offsets (pups) from the base of the mother plant during repotting in spring. Each pup needs at least one leaf and a root system. Pot into a warm, humid environment and keep the soil lightly moist. Rhizome division is also possible but stressful — handle with care.
Common Problems & Fixes
Yellowing leaves / leaf drop
Usually overwatering, low humidity, or cold stress — check soil moisture, boost humidity, and move away from drafts
Brown crispy leaf edges
Low humidity — increase to 60%+ with a humidifier or pebble tray; avoid misting directly on leaves
Plant goes dormant / loses all leaves
Normal response to cold, low light, or seasonal change — keep the corm barely moist and warm; it will resprout
